The Data Engineer role

Google data engineers build and own data products, pipelines and data-quality frameworks for specific product areas (Merchant Shopping, gTech users and products, Google.org) rather than a central DE org. Most similar work sits under Software Engineer titles, so ‘Data Engineer’ reqs are few and tend to require 3–5+ years. Pay is posted as base plus a 15% bonus target and equity.

Small and niche: only three ‘Data Engineer’-titled US reqs, spread across gTech, Ads/Merchant Shopping and Google.org, with data engineering folded into the Software Engineer family (levels.fyi lists Data Engineer under Software Engineer, L3–L6, 63 submissions); platforms named in reqs include BigQuery, Dataflow and Flume.

Worth knowing: Google has only three ‘Data Engineer’ reqs open in the US, all posted September 28–30, 2026 — and the Merchant Shopping req asks for a ‘full-stack’ engineer who bridges software, data engineering and data science using genAI.
