The ML Engineer List

Live index

The best machine learning engineer jobs, ranked.

Machine learning engineering pay now runs on three tracks: the AI labs post $250k–$500k base for research engineers (and up to $850k on specialist reqs), Netflix posts $466k–$750k in cash, and big tech posts mid-level bands between roughly $140k and $280k before equity. This is the living index of the ML orgs worth your application — posted pay, which companies post AI engineer and applied-AI tracks, and where residencies and new-grad paths exist, re-verified as the market moves. Every number traces to a posted range, a live careers page, or levels.fyi.

What does a machine learning engineer do?

A machine learning engineer builds and ships the models a product runs on: training and evaluating them, designing the data and feature pipelines that feed them, serving them at scale, and owning the metrics that say whether they work. At the AI labs the same work is called research engineering — building the training, inference and evaluation systems behind frontier models — and a newer applied-AI or AI engineer track builds products on top of those models. Unlike a data scientist, the job is production software engineering; unlike a research scientist, it is measured in shipped systems rather than papers.

The interview loop is consistent across the list: a coding round (often with an ML flavor), an ML system design round, an ML depth round on fundamentals and your past projects, and behavioral. The labs add a research-engineering pairing or take-home, and big tech adds a standard algorithms round. Residency and new-grad paths exist but are small and seasonal, so most hiring is at two or more years of experience.

Preparing for the loop? Start with our guides to the Anthropic machine learning engineer interview, Netflix machine learning engineer interview, and Pinterest machine learning engineer interview.

How we rank

Every program gets an Index score out of 100, built from four weighted dimensions. Scores are editorial judgments grounded in the data below — not paid placements.

30%
Compensation

Posted ML engineer salary bands, levels.fyi data, and verified offer reports — total comp where an ML-specific sample exists, base bands otherwise.

25%
Program maturity

How real the ML org is: a dedicated ML or research engineering ladder, named teams (pretraining, post-training, inference, applied), the compute behind them, and whether there is a residency or new-grad path.

25%
Career capital

What the role does for the rest of your career — brand strength, the models and scale you get to work on, and how close the work sits to the frontier.

20%
Momentum

Open req counts, new applied-AI and AI engineer tracks, residency and entry-level paths, and whether the org is expanding or restructuring.

We also track xAI, Tesla, Databricks, Scale AI, Uber, Stripe, Snap, TikTok and Cohere, currently outside the ranking and queued for the next data pass. OpenAI and Anthropic are ranked on their Research Engineer reqs, Amazon on its Machine Learning Engineer II req alongside the Applied Scientist ladder, and Google and Microsoft on the software and applied-science titles that carry their ML work, because none of the four posts a plain ‘Machine Learning Engineer’ ladder. Total compensation is shown only where levels.fyi has an ML-specific mid-level sample, which is why OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Waymo and Reddit show base bands alone.

Compensation data comes from posted salary ranges (required in several US states), levels.fyi, and public offer reports; figures are US-market and vary by level and location. Hiring status reflects each company’s careers page as of October 11, 2026. Spotted something outdated? Email [email protected].

Frequently asked questions

Three markets. Big tech posts mid-level bands between roughly $140k and $280k before equity: Microsoft IC3 $102,100–$202,200, NVIDIA Level 2–3 $124,000–$241,500, Pinterest MLE II $138,905–$285,982, Amazon MLE II $143,700–$194,400, Google SWE III AI/ML $147,000–$210,000 plus a 15% bonus target, Apple ICT3–ICT4 $150,400–$277,600, Meta $154,003–$217,000 and Waymo $175,000–$215,000, with Reddit’s senior-only reqs at $216,700–$303,400. The AI labs post research engineer bands of $250,000–$445,000 (OpenAI) and $350,000–$500,000 (Anthropic), both reaching $850,000 on specialist reqs. Netflix posts $466,000–$750,000 for an ML Engineer 5, all cash. With equity, levels.fyi puts mid-level total compensation at $211k–$305k at NVIDIA, $251k–$283k at Apple, $255k–$330k at Amazon, $279k–$340k at Google, $288k–$349k at Meta, $300k–$340k at Pinterest and $540k–$585k at Netflix.
Netflix on posted base — $466,000–$750,000 for an ML Engineer 5, paid as salary with no bonus — followed by the labs: Anthropic posts $350,000–$500,000 on its Production Model Post-Training research engineer req and $500,000–$850,000 on RL and Computer Use, and OpenAI posts $250,000–$445,000 on its generic Research Engineer req and up to $850,000 on Foundations. Among big tech, Meta E4 ($288k–$349k), Google L4 ($279k–$340k) and Pinterest ($300k–$340k) lead on reported total compensation, and Apple posts the highest big-tech top-of-band base at $277,600.
A recruiter screen, a technical screen, then a loop of four to six rounds: a coding round (often ML-flavored), an ML system design round, an ML depth round on fundamentals and your past work, and behavioral. The labs run it differently: OpenAI uses a team-specific skills assessment (pair coding, a take-home or a technical test) and a final four-to-six-hour block with four to six people, and Anthropic runs live coding in Colab or CodeSignal followed by research-coding, ML-systems, research-discussion and values rounds. Google runs a rubric-scored structured panel with no AI tools over six to eight weeks; Meta runs up to six 45-minute rounds with a built-in AI assistant in CoderPad and takes two to three months; Amazon puts a Leadership Principles question in every one of its four 55-minute rounds; NVIDIA requires an onsite interview before any offer; Reddit opens with a notebook modeling task on a provided dataset.
Mostly where the company draws its lines. OpenAI and Anthropic call the role research engineer — building training, post-training, inference and evaluation systems inside research teams, with no separate ML engineer ladder. Google hires the same work as Software Engineer III or Senior with AI/ML in the title, and DeepMind as Research Engineer. Amazon splits Applied Scientist (a separate science ladder that owns model research, 180 open reqs) from Machine Learning Engineer (on the SDE ladder, shipping models). Microsoft hires through Applied Scientist, Applied ML Engineer and Software Engineer II AI titles, and Meta, Apple, Netflix, Pinterest, Waymo and Reddit post ML engineer titles directly. AI engineer and applied-AI titles — OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineer and Forward Deployed Engineer, Anthropic’s Applied AI Engineer and Architect, Apple’s Applied AI Engineer, NVIDIA’s Applied AI Engineer reqs — build products and deployments on top of models rather than training them.
Not for most of the engineering reqs on this list. OpenAI’s generic Research Engineer req states no years or degree, Anthropic asks for a bachelor’s or equivalent and says publications are not required, Google’s SWE III AI/ML wants a bachelor’s plus two years of coding and one of ML, Meta’s mid-level RecSys req wants a bachelor’s plus two years, Apple posted an ICT2 ML engineer req whose only degree bar is a bachelor’s, Amazon’s MLE asks for a bachelor’s plus three years, and Reddit states no minimum degree. The PhD matters on the science side: Amazon’s Applied Scientist II wants a PhD or a master’s plus four years, NVIDIA’s core reqs ask for an MS or PhD, Waymo and Pinterest prefer one, and the residencies (Apple AIML, OpenAI) and Google’s early-career AI/ML req target advanced-degree graduates.
Dedicated new-grad reqs are open at Pinterest (2027 University Grad MLE for master’s and PhD students, opened October 1), Google (Software Engineer, AI/ML, PhD, Early Career, 2027 Start), NVIDIA (44 New College Grad reqs including an Applied ML Engineer for AI for VLSI Design), Waymo (an MLE Perception LLM/VLM PhD new-grad req) and Apple (an ICT2 ML engineer req posted October 9 that needs only a bachelor’s); Meta accepts a degree in progress on two ML reqs. Residencies and fellowships: Anthropic Fellows (next cohort expected January 2027, $3,850 a week), Apple’s annual AIML Residency (the 2026 call closed in January; no 2027 call yet) and the OpenAI Residency (2026 cohort closed, none announced for 2027). Amazon, Microsoft and NVIDIA run 2027 ML and applied-science internships; Waymo has 55 Summer 2027 intern reqs. Reddit has no entry-level ML path, and Netflix’s is a single PhD-only internship.
Rarely at the mid level. Reddit lists all 14 of its ML reqs as Remote, United States, Pinterest’s MLE II reqs are remote with office visits one to two times a quarter, Netflix tags one of its four MLE 5 reqs remote, Anthropic marks three of 26 research engineer reqs remote-friendly with travel, NVIDIA lists some California-remote locations, and two of Microsoft’s 13 ML reqs are remote. OpenAI states three days in office on most reqs, Google, Meta and Apple are hybrid at about three days, Waymo is hybrid, and Amazon is five days in office.
Yes, and it is concentrated. Apple lists 111 US Machine Learning Engineer reqs (64 non-senior), Amazon 180 Applied Scientist reqs below Senior (64 posted in the last 30 days), Google at least 90 AI/ML engineering reqs plus 94 DeepMind roles, Waymo 39 ML engineer reqs, Anthropic 26 research engineer reqs, OpenAI 20 among 815 open postings, and NVIDIA 1,405 US postings with 22 in ML-engineering title families. The thin spots are Netflix (four MLE 5 reqs), Microsoft (seven mid-level ML and AI reqs) and Meta (a verified floor of 11), and Reddit’s 14 reqs all start at Senior. The 2026 shift is toward agents and applied AI: OpenAI’s Applied AI org holds 111 postings, Anthropic’s RL reqs cover code, computer use, cyber and chip design, Apple posted an Agentic AI ML engineer req, and Meta’s hiring page now puts an AI assistant inside the coding interviews.
