Remote data science seats are concentrated at a handful of companies: Netflix lists all four of its US data scientist reqs as ‘Remote, United States’ with a $280,000–$421,000 band, Airbnb’s three open reqs are all US-remote-eligible, Pinterest’s DS II is remote with in-person collaboration one to two times a quarter, Spotify’s Work From Anywhere program covers its New York-based reqs, and five of Microsoft’s 15 DS reqs are remote (all Senior or Principal). The programs below are the ones where remote is a real option; Amazon (five days in office), Meta, Google and Apple (hybrid, about three days), OpenAI (three days, one remote req), Uber (at least half your time in office) and DoorDash (hybrid) are not.

Netflix data scientists are embedded partners to product and business teams, centered on A/B testing and causal inference; model building sits in a separate ML Scientist track. Hiring is rolling, experienced-only and fully remote in the US, with salary-only pay.

Pinterest data scientists partner with engineering, product, ads and marketing on metrics, experimentation and measurement: the Infrastructure DS II req is measurement and data-foundations work, and the grad req is product analytics with A/B testing. The work is analytics and inference first, with forecasting on some Staff reqs; experienced hiring is rolling and university hiring is seasonal.

Microsoft data scientists sit in the Data Science discipline inside product and business teams such as M365 Copilot, marketing analytics and customer engineering. The posted DS II role is ML-heavy (LLM evaluation, RAG, experimentation), and mid-level hiring is thin, with most open reqs at Senior and Principal.

Spotify’s US data scientists work in Product Insights for the Music Mission (Discovery Mode, Marquee, Showcase): metrics, dashboards and experiments, with ML model evaluation on the newer req. It is product analytics and experimentation, some of it ML-adjacent, hired one req per team on a rolling basis.

Common questions

Netflix (every open US data scientist req is remote, with pay posted at $280,000–$775,000 across DS 4–6), Airbnb (all three open reqs are US-remote-eligible in approved states), Pinterest (the Data Scientist II req is remote across the US with quarterly in-person time), Spotify (Work From Anywhere, with US reqs on Eastern time) and Microsoft (five of 15 DS reqs are remote, all Senior or Principal; the Data Scientist II req is three days in Redmond).

Not on this list. Netflix’s remote bands are the highest posted anywhere, Airbnb’s remote req posts $151,000–$175,000 at two years of experience, and Pinterest’s remote DS II band tops out at $235,319. Companies that adjust pay by location — Amazon’s city rates, Microsoft’s metro bands, Pinterest’s location tiers — do so by where you live, not by remote status.

Because the biggest hirers are: Amazon tags every data scientist req on-site under its five-day policy, Google and Meta are hybrid at about three days, OpenAI’s core reqs state three days in office, and Uber requires at least half your time in office. Data scientists sit with product teams, and the companies that went back to the office for engineers did the same for data science. The remote-friendly companies tend to be those that were remote-first before 2023 — Netflix, Airbnb, Spotify, Pinterest.
