Shopify hires for a remote-first, change-heavy culture, and its interview process reflects that: a conversational Life Story round most candidates don't see coming, plus role-specific technical or product rounds.

This guide breaks down each stage, the rounds you'll face, and the questions candidates report, so you can prepare for a Shopify interview. The exact format shifts by team, role, and year, so expect some variation from what you read here.

The Shopify interview process

The Shopify interview process is fully remote and adapts to the role, but most candidates move through these stages:

Recruiter call: 30-45 minutes, sometimes with a short coding question for technical roles
Life Story interview: About an hour long, a conversational behavioral round unique to Shopify
Onsite loop: Typically 3-5 sessions of 40-90 minutes, run virtually, with role-specific technical or product rounds

Shopify recruiter call

The first stage of the interview is a 30-45 minute call with a Shopify recruiter that sets up the rest of the loop. For many roles it's more motivational and level-setting than evaluative: the recruiter asks about your background, your interest in Shopify, and your fit for the team. For technical roles, the call may include a short coding question on CoderPad, typically easy to medium difficulty.

Have your resume up to date, and for design or product roles, bring a portfolio or examples of past work you can walk through. Treat this as your chance to learn how your specific loop will be structured, since the recruiter can tell you which rounds to expect.

Shopify Life Story interview

The Life Story interview is Shopify's signature round, and it's consistently described as the make-or-break stage. It's an hour-long, conversational interview where an interviewer walks chronologically through your background, asking why you made the decisions you did and what you learned. Shopify teams use this round to reduce interviewer bias and to find qualities they believe predict success regardless of your resume.

Shopify says it assesses five traits during the Life Story. Frame your stories to surface these traits naturally:

Trait	What the interviewer is looking for
Impact	Have you made a real, positive difference for the people and projects around you?
Readiness	Do you have the skills and judgment the role needs now?
Trust	Are you authentic, and can you build trust and own responsibility?
Engagement	Are you genuinely invested in your work and interests?
Self-awareness	Do you know your strengths, weaknesses, and what you've learned from failure?

Authenticity matters more than polish here. Candidates who over-rehearse or recite their resume tend to do worse than those who tell honest, specific stories, including ones about failures and turning points. A common mistake is to under-prepare for this round because it sounds casual; it isn't.

How to prepare for the Life Story interview

Map your career chronologically before the interview. Prepare three to five stories, each a couple of minutes long, that show growth, ownership, and impact, and include:

Why you joined
What you accomplished
Why you left
What you learned

Connect each story to at least one of the traits in the table above, and pick examples you actually care about rather than the most impressive-sounding ones, since engagement is part of what's being measured.

Because the Life Story round is a genuine conversation, take the call somewhere quiet and private, and be ready for interviewers to follow up on anything you raise. Spending time in Shopify's product as a merchant or customer and reading its engineering and UX content will help you speak credibly about the company.

Shopify onsite interview loop

Shopify's onsite loop is conducted virtually and usually runs 3-5 sessions of 40-90 minutes, sometimes on one day and sometimes spread across several. What's inside the loop depends on your role.

Technical roles

Engineering and data candidates typically face three kinds of sessions:

The coding exercise is a 40-60 minute, practical problem solved with a Shopify developer or data scientist, where you can usually use your preferred language and reference documentation as you go
The pair-programming session, roughly 75-90 minutes, has you write code while a Shopify engineer collaborates and asks questions, so it's as much a test of how you communicate and work with someone as of the code itself
The technical deep dive is a conversational session about a past project, where interviewers ask about your decisions, trade-offs, and the impact you had

Familiarity with Ruby helps, and front-end candidates should expect to work in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. To build the underlying skills, read our software engineering interview course. For senior loops that include architecture rounds, our system design course is a good starting point.

Product and non-technical roles

Product manager candidates meet with 3-5 team members and face highly conversational rounds that still lean on technical fluency. There are typically three recurring sessions:

The product-strategy or "thought leadership" discussion about Shopify's market and where a product should go
The analytical round where you reason with metrics, trade-offs, and experiments
The product-design or case round, which starts from an ambiguous problem and asks you to scope it, work through possible solutions, and make a recommendation

Shopify has also leaned into prototyping, with leadership publicly pushing PMs to build prototypes, so comfort with hands-on product work helps.

For product prep, the Shopify PM interview guide covers the loop in detail, and our PM interview course works through strategy, analytical, and product-design questions. UX candidates may also see a collaborative design session with a current Shopify designer, which our product design course will help you prepare for.

Shopify interview questions

These are examples of the kinds of questions candidates report at Shopify, grouped by round. For the full, regularly updated set of interview prompts with community answers, see our Shopify question bank.

Behavioral round questions

Behavioral themes run through the whole Shopify interview process, and most map back to the five Life Story traits: impact, readiness, trust, engagement, and self-awareness.

Here are some common prompts reported by candidates:

Walk me through your career so far, in your own words.
Why Shopify?
Tell me about a time you acted without complete information.
Describe a time you went deep on a user's or customer's problem.
Tell me about a meaningful failure and what you changed afterward.
How do you build trust with people you work with?

To structure stories that stay genuine rather than rehearsed, our behavioral interview course is built for exactly this kind of round.

Product and strategy round questions

Here are some common product and strategy questions reported by candidates:

You're the CEO of Shopify. What should the company focus on over the next five years?
How would you improve Shopify for new merchants who struggle to source products to sell?
Shopify wants its merchants to be more successful. As a PM, what would you do to support that?
How would you measure whether a Shopify feature is succeeding?

Coding and technical round questions

Shopify's coding problems tend to be practical, often built on everyday structures like arrays, strings, and hash maps, with running and debugging expected as you go.

Here are some questions reported by candidates:

Write a program that controls the movement of a robot.
Parse or transform a block of input, handling edge cases along the way.
Solve a small algorithmic problem under time pressure while narrating your approach.
Design a search system.

Tips for getting hired at Shopify

Prepare the Life Story as seriously as the technical rounds. Build your chronological story and three-to-five anchor examples in advance.
Lead with authenticity. Shopify is hiring the person behind the resume, and interviewers are trained to spot rehearsed answers. Honest reflection on failures tends to land better than a flawless highlight reel.
Show you can operate in ambiguity. Shopify's "thrive on change" framing is real, and stories where you made progress without clear direction or full information speak directly to what they value.
Use the product. Spend time in Shopify as a merchant or customer and read their engineering and UX content to get specific, current material to draw on.

What to know about Shopify before your interview

Understanding how Shopify operates helps you interview well, especially in the Life Story round, where interviewers look for genuine fit with how the company works. Here's the context worth having before your Shopify interview.

Who does Shopify hire?

Shopify hires across engineering, product, design, and data, and looks for people who can make good decisions quickly, work autonomously, and stay effective in constant change. These behaviors show up in how interviewers evaluate candidates. Recruiters are trained to look for purposeful impact, engagement, the ability to build trust, and self-awareness, traits the company believes carry across any professional background.

Shopify splits team members into two tracks: a Crafter track for individual contributors who execute on specific projects, and a Manager track for leaders running teams.

What does Shopify do?

Shopify is a platform that gives merchants the tools to start, run, and grow a business online and in person. Launched in 2006 in Ottawa, Canada, it powers stores for millions of merchants across roughly 175 countries and is one of Canada's most valuable technology companies. Its software stack is built largely on Ruby on Rails, so Ruby familiarity is a plus for engineering candidates.

Where is Shopify located?

Shopify is digital-first, so most employees work remotely and interviews are conducted virtually. It's headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, and Shopify employs roughly 9,000 people globally.

Shopify interview FAQs

How long does the Shopify interview process take?

The Shopify interview process usually takes several weeks, with most candidates moving through two to four stages. Some report a longer process running closer to three to four months depending on role, team, and scheduling, so treat any single timeline as a rough guide.

Does the Shopify interview process vary by role?

The Shopify interview process varies by role more than at many other big tech companies. The recruiter call and Life Story round stay fairly consistent, but the onsite loop changes shape, with technical, product, and design candidates each facing different sessions. Because teams run their own loops, two candidates for the same title can have different experiences.

Is there a coding assessment or take-home at Shopify?

Shopify's technical roles usually include a coding assessment, and it's a live exercise rather than a take-home. Don't assume a multi-day take-home unless your recruiter mentions it.

Can I reapply to Shopify if I'm rejected?

You can reapply to Shopify after a rejection, and most candidates report waiting roughly six months to a year before doing so. Shopify posts new roles on a rolling basis and there's no formal public ban, so a stronger application later is worth pursuing.

Does Shopify hire new graduates and interns?

Shopify hires new graduates and interns, running internship and early-career programs (particularly in engineering) that serve as entry points into its remote-first environment. These early-career loops follow the same shape as experienced ones, including a Life Story round scaled to your experience.

How hard is the Shopify interview?

The Shopify interview is generally considered rigorous but fair. The toughest part for most candidates is the Life Story round: there usually aren't trick questions, so success comes down to telling specific, reflective, authentic stories in a loose conversational format.
