# Spotify Data Scientist Interview Guide

**Updated a month ago by Spotify candidates** · Expert guide · Written by Kevin Landucci, Subject Matter Expert, Interviewing

Aced (formerly Exponent) provides this guide for candidates preparing for Spotify data scientist interviews. It covers the role, interview loop, preparation advice, compensation figures, and sample questions. The guide was written with help from a senior data scientist at Spotify.

## The gist

Spotify data scientist interviews emphasize:

- Solving practical problems
- Strong product focus
- Engaging, conversational discussions
- Friendly, approachable interviewers

Spotify seeks data scientists who are passionate about music, fit a light-hearted culture, and communicate technical ideas exceptionally well to both technical and non-technical audiences. Spotify values individual autonomy and ownership, reduces process intentionally, and relies on collaboration across teams; communication is therefore especially important.

The hardest stage is the presentation to an interview panel. Poor technical communication is described as the most common reason for rejection. Explain your work clearly enough for an intelligent high-school student with no data-science background to understand it.

## What does a Spotify data scientist do?

Spotify uses a product data science model. Data scientists work with product managers and engineers to run experiments, define roadmaps, and drive data-informed business decisions. Building or deploying machine-learning models is less central to this role; the guide associates that work more with machine-learning engineers.

The role focuses on experiments and A/B tests, using statistics and causal inference when experiments are infeasible. The typical stack includes SQL, Python, Google BigQuery for data warehousing, and Tableau. When data becomes too large to manage directly, data scientists may hand it to an analytics engineer for analysis and insight gathering.

Useful preparation includes hands-on experience synthesizing insights with Python, BigQuery, SQL, and Tableau; experimentation and statistics; machine learning for decision-making; and presenting technical findings with clear product or business implications.

Spotify has seven data-scientist levels. The guide describes an equally split three-year equity vesting schedule and gives these average total-compensation figures for the first four levels:

| Level | Average total compensation |
|---|---:|
| Associate data scientist | $142k |
| Data scientist I | $164k |
| Data scientist II | $176k |
| Senior data scientist | $204k |

## Before you apply

1. Make technical communication your most obvious strength. Consider a public-speaking class or [practice interviewing with peers](https://www.aced.io/practice).
2. Develop opinions about music, including trends you follow and what makes a playlist successful. Targeted feedback is available through [a coaching session](https://www.aced.io/coaching?category=mock_interviews&src=nav&company=spotify) from a Spotify data scientist.
3. Senior data scientist is described as Spotify’s most common hire and the most common position applied for. Use a strong [resume](https://www.aced.io/resume).

## Interview process

The typical process is described as team-independent, with relatively similar loops for candidates:

1. **Recruiter screen** — checks minimum role requirements.
2. **Technical screen** — essential SQL, Python, and statistics.
3. **Hiring manager round** — primarily behavioral.
4. **Final round** — primarily a case-study presentation.

Spotify provides interviewer training, but the guide says oversight is limited and interviewers can ask questions of their choice. Spotify and Google are described as emphasizing thought process in technical rounds, while Meta and Amazon are described as emphasizing results.

### Recruiter

Prepare to discuss experience related to the job description, your motivation, and compensation expectations. Sample questions:

- Walk me through your resume.
- Why did you apply to Spotify?
- What are you looking for in your next role?
- What are your compensation expectations?

### Technical

This is a one-hour CoderPad round divided among SQL, Python, and statistics. SQL is generally basic and usually does not require complex functions such as window functions. Coding typically covers easy-to-medium data structures and algorithms and may include Pandas and NumPy.

For SQL, mid-level candidates may write the query immediately. Senior candidates should first explain why the query matters from a business perspective, then write it. Communication problems are a common reason for rejection, particularly at senior level.

A technically correct statistics answer can still fail if it is not understandable to a non-technical listener. For example:

- **Avoid:** “P-value is the level of marginal significance within a statistical hypothesis test, representing the probability of the occurrence of a given event.”
- **Prefer:** “The p-value is the probability that what happened was due to random chance rather than something meaningful or interesting.”

Sample questions:

- Write a function that changes the input of one column in Pandas.
- Solve the FizzBuzz problem.

### Hiring manager

This round is mainly behavioral and may include a small case study. It is the only one-on-one time with the hiring manager until the case-study presentation, supporting the expectation that senior data scientists work autonomously.

Sample questions:

- Why Spotify?
- What’s your philosophy on experimentation?

### Final round

Before the final interview, candidates receive one week for a take-home assignment. The case-study prompt is: **“What makes a playlist successful?”**

At the onsite, present findings to a small group including the hiring manager. Additional rounds involve a product manager, a user researcher, and another data scientist. Discussions are mainly conversational but technical; candidates probably will not code or write queries onsite. Instead, discuss prior work and approaches to hypothetical, open-ended data-science problems.

#### Case-study presentation

The presentation is described as the crux and highest-weighted part of the final round. Candidates present to approximately five people, and this is where much of the pass/fail decision occurs.

- Tailor complex analysis to the least technical person in the room.
- Begin with a high-level overview, such as the company’s key goals and how the case study relates to each.
- Mid-level candidates present findings and insights.
- Senior candidates additionally recommend next steps and turn an ambiguous problem into roadmap tasks, acting as though they already work at Spotify.

## Interview questions

### Behavioral

The behavioral round is described as relatively easy, with a friendly, consensus-oriented culture. Interviewers generally look for positivity, ownership, and clear communication rather than testing a rigorous list of specific cultural traits. The guide compares Spotify’s approach more closely with [Microsoft](https://www.aced.io/companies/microsoft) than [Amazon](https://www.aced.io/companies/amazon).

Sample questions:

- Why do you want to be a data scientist?
- Tell me about a project where you worked with multiple stakeholders and dealt with conflicting priorities.
- How do you work on a team? What are your preferences?

### SQL and Python

Spotify assesses essential SQL, basic data structures and algorithms, and Pandas and NumPy rather than unusually difficult SQL or Python rounds. Python is described as being failed more often, possibly because it is used more frequently in day-to-day data-science work.

Senior candidates should clarify the problem before designing a solution, asking questions such as “Why are we running this experiment?” and “What are the key learnings we’re trying to get from this experiment?”

SQL topics:

- Joins
- Aggregate functions
- Analytical functions
- Set operators
- Subqueries

SQL sample questions:

- Write a function to apply a markdown rate to certain song streams.
- For a dataset, find the most popular track and the day on which it had the most popularity for each track.

Python topics:

- [Pandas data manipulation](https://www.aced.io/courses/python-coding-data-scientist-questions)
- Solving Pandas problems
- NumPy data manipulation

Python sample questions:

- Write a Python function to apply a markdown rate to certain song streams.
- Use Pandas to filter a dataset to X rows and aggregate Y metrics.

### Statistics

Statistics matter because Spotify emphasizes experimentation and A/B testing. When every possibility cannot be tested directly, statistical methods help infer what a test might produce. Explain technical concepts for non-data-scientists, not only by giving formal definitions.

Topics:

- [Regression](https://www.aced.io/courses/ml-concepts-questions-data-scientists/linear-regression)
- P-values
- Applied machine-learning cases

Sample questions:

- How do you deal with a class-imbalanced dataset?
- What is a p-value?

### Product manager

Discuss small product changes that could produce significant results, whether discussing your background or a hypothetical product. One example is considering what might happen if users could “thumbs down” songs and explaining the result and rationale.

Sample question:

- How do you approach scoping new work? How do you work with PM stakeholders?

### Experimentation

Another data scientist usually conducts this round. It emphasizes A/B testing and may determine the candidate’s level more than the technical screen. Prompts are likely to be ambiguous.

Sample questions:

- Look at these A/B test results. Are the findings significant?
- How would you create a new Pandas column aggregating elements from other columns? How would you visualize the data, and what modeling would you use to predict X?
- If you were on the ads team and a product manager wanted to increase ad load for a specific user group, how would you decide whether to launch it and measure success?

### User research

UX researchers usually conduct these rounds. Personalization and recommendation engines are central to Spotify’s product and business, so relevant discussion may focus on those areas.

Sample question:

- What’s a trend in music you’re interested in?
