## The gist

Slack is owned by Salesforce but is described here as retaining a hip, thoughtful culture and a scrappy acquired-startup identity. Slack has relatively few data engineers, so its data engineers are responsible for work at substantial scale.

Slack's interview process is described as structured and comparatively unbiased. Candidates generally report positive experiences because of the process's structure and fairness. Slack prefers practical questions to theoretical questions.

“Playfulness” is one of Slack's stated top values. The guide describes that lighthearted quality as influencing both the product and the interview process. Slack is characterized as occupying a middle ground between a product company and an engineering company.

The guide gives a broad total-compensation range of **$201k–$288k** for Slack data engineers, based on sparse publicly available data. It says the range is a starting point and that compensation may be higher, especially for engineers at or above the senior level.

## What does a Slack Data Engineer do?

Slack has two kinds of data engineers:

1. **Core data engineering team members** work on the core data engineering team.
2. **Satellite data engineers** often support a regional team in another city and are responsible for its A/B testing.

Across both types of role, a central goal is answering questions such as: “How can we increase users' usage of the app?”
