# Shopify Product Manager (PM) Interview Guide

Updated a month ago by Shopify candidates. We provide this Aced (formerly Exponent) expert guide for preparing for Shopify product manager interviews.

Shopify is described here as a fast-growing technology company that makes commerce better for more than 800K merchants in 175 countries. Shopify is actively hiring product managers, particularly for growth roles, and emphasizes impactful products and substantial ownership from product managers. Prepare especially for growth-oriented questions because Shopify says it is in “growth mode.”

## Interview Process

Shopify’s product manager hiring process is presented as a multi-step process.

### Recruiter Call

The first stage is a quick call with a Shopify recruiter. It is less evaluative and focuses more on motivation and level-setting. Expect questions about your product management experience and why you want to work at Shopify. Preparation can be light: [review your resume](https://www.aced.io/resume?src=guide) and research Shopify.

### Life Story Interview

This is a one-hour conversational interview about your experience and how you reached your current position. Shopify recommends reflecting on your experiences beforehand. We recommend [creating your personal story bank](https://www.aced.io/courses/tpm/behavioral-interviews-creating-story-bank) so you have clear examples to draw on.

Shopify emphasizes stories demonstrating:

- **Impact:** Do you make a major impact for others around you?
- **Trust:** Can you communicate authentically?
- **Engagement:** Do you invest in your work and life?
- **Self-awareness:** Do you know your strengths and weaknesses?
- **Readiness:** Are you qualified for the role?

Connect your experience to Shopify’s goals and explain how your background naturally led you to want to work there. For additional preparation, read [our behavioral interview blog post](https://blog.aced.io/prepare-product-management-behavioral-interviews/).

### On-site Interview

You may meet 3–5 team members for up to an hour each. Shopify emphasizes conversational interviews and learning about fit with the company. The guide lists three general on-site formats:

- **Thought Leadership Interview:** Discuss the big picture, your view of the market, and a proposed product vision.
- **Case Study Interview:** Work through a one-paragraph challenge on a whiteboard. This interview is highly conversational.
- **Dev/UX Interview:** Speak with two people—one from engineering and one from UX—about your background and ideas.

## Sample Interview Questions

Shopify tests product manager candidates across five core competencies.

### Product Strategy

Product strategy tests high-level thinking amid growth and uncertainty. Use analytics and product judgment to develop a strategy for the product’s next steps. Review the [product strategy questions recently asked at Shopify](https://www.aced.io/questions?company=shopify&role=pm&type=product-strategy).

Prepare by reviewing Shopify’s current strategy, including [Shopify’s recent keynote](https://www.shopify.com/partners/blog/shopify-unite-2019-keynotes) and [Stratechery’s article on Shopify](https://stratechery.com/2019/shopify-and-the-power-of-platforms/).

### Analysis

Analytical questions involve reasoning with data: selecting and interpreting KPIs, understanding metric tradeoffs, measuring KPI success, and running A/B tests. Review the [analytical questions recently asked at Shopify](https://www.aced.io/questions?company=shopify&role=pm&type=analytical).

Start with the product’s goals at a high level, then drill down into actions and metrics. We recommend the GAME framework for key-metrics questions, demonstrated in [this PM lesson](https://www.aced.io/courses/pm/youtube-metrics).

### Design Thinking

Design-thinking questions begin with an ambiguous problem and ask you to devise a solution using user empathy, product vision, and design sensibility. Review the [design-thinking questions recently asked at Shopify](https://www.aced.io/questions?company=shopify&role=pm&type=product-design).

Practice these questions, use a whiteboard, and [always mention tradeoffs](https://blog.aced.io/the-key-to-a-successful-pm-interview-answer-tradeoffs/). The ambiguity is intentional; practice makes this format more manageable.

### Technical

As of 2025, Shopify indicated plans to introduce coding questions for all product managers, beginning with APMs. The interviews are expected to emphasize prototyping skills using AI tools. Shopify’s COO was quoted as saying, “There is no excuse for PMs not building prototypes.”

Be prepared to reason about technical constraints and engineering tradeoffs. Review the [technical questions recently asked at Shopify](https://www.aced.io/questions?company=shopify&role=pm&type=technical), then use the [TPM interview course](https://www.aced.io/courses/tpm) and [software engineering interview course](https://www.aced.io/courses/software-engineering) to review technical concepts and focus on weaker areas.

### Working with a Team

Cross-functional collaboration is central to being a Shopify product manager. Shopify’s conversational, interactive process emphasizes working effectively with others. Review the [team questions recently asked at Shopify](https://www.aced.io/questions?company=shopify&role=pm&type=behavioral).

These interviews are behavioral. Prepare examples by [building a story bank](https://www.aced.io/courses/tpm/behavioral-interviews-creating-story-bank).

## Tips and Strategies

Shopify product managers recommend the following approaches.

### Problem solving

Focus on the process rather than only the solution. Reaching a wrong answer is acceptable when you demonstrate thoughtful reasoning. Pause before answering.

### Solve out loud

Interviewers cannot evaluate reasoning they cannot hear. Explain your thinking aloud and, as we recommend, [use a whiteboard](https://www.aced.io/courses/pm/tips-whiteboard).

### Clarify and ask questions

Before answering a PM interview question, ask one or two clarifying questions. This builds rapport, confirms that you and the interviewer share the same understanding, and demonstrates an important product-management skill.

### Iterate and evolve

It is acceptable—and even encouraged—to make mistakes during the interview. Brainstorming is messy and may involve dead ends. Stay confident, adapt as you go, and keep moving forward.
