# Amazon Business Intelligence Engineer (BIE) Interview Guide

We provide this guide for candidates preparing for Amazon Business Intelligence Engineer interviews. It was updated a month ago by Amazon candidates. The guide includes an **Expert guide**, **2 interview experiences**, **21 questions**, and a resume collection.

## What Amazon BIEs do

Amazon Business Intelligence Engineers analyze business data and build the systems and outputs that support decisions. BIEs design analytics, key performance indicators, data pipelines, reports, dashboards, and visualizations. The role requires statistics, data warehousing, Extract, Transform, Load (ETL), and SQL proficiency.

## Interview Process

The BIE process generally consists of **two phone interviews followed by an onsite round**.

### Phone Screen

The first stage is an initial discovery screen, usually with a recruiter, although some locations may add a team-member or hiring-manager screen. The discussion focuses on fit, past work experience, resume details, and why you want to join the specific team. Review your resume closely and prepare to explain key points and your motivation.

### Technical Screen

The live technical screen tests SQL and Python fundamentals. Prepare for **at least five** questions covering SQL, Python, data visualization, and/or business analytics. We recommend preparing not only coding but also presentation skills and business acumen: candidates need to communicate actionable recommendations and show how they would use corporate data to make business decisions.

### On-Site

The onsite has **5–6 individual rounds** with business intelligence engineers, data scientists, and a hiring manager. Each round lasts **45 minutes to 1 hour**. Interviews commonly run from around **10 AM to 4 PM**, with a **one-hour lunch break**.

Expect deeper data-science and business-analytics questions, qualifying requirements, edge cases, and whiteboarding problems. Questions may draw on real business problems Amazon has faced, so prepare by studying Amazon’s structure and history.

Behavioral questions focus heavily on [Amazon behavioral interview questions](https://blog.aced.io/how-to-nail-amazons-behavioral-interview-questions/) and [Amazon's Leadership Principles](https://www.aced.io/courses/amazon-leadership-principles). The BIE and data-scientist interviews also cover statistics, SQL, data science, and broader data-science concepts.

Several Amazon employees participate in the onsite. Each interviewer has an equal say in the final decision except the designated **bar raiser**, who has veto power and evaluates company-level fit rather than only fit for the role. The guide says candidates should demonstrate standards higher than at least 50% of employees. It also says the interview committee will respond within **24 hours** after the interviews.

## Sample Interview Questions

The guide identifies Amazon behavioral questions as a way to assess fit with Amazon’s leadership principles. The remaining sample-question content is member-only.
